Founded in 2011 from an organic fusion of Brazilian and Canadian musical talents, Maria embodies the vibrant spirit of northeastern Brazilian folk music, spanning the captivating rhythms of forró to the expansive sounds of world music. Under the dynamic leadership of Jerusa Leão, Maria has graced iconic venues and festivals worldwide, including the esteemed Festival Mémoire et Racines, Mundial Montreal, and Cultura 360.
A perennial favourite among audiences, Maria’s performances are a sensory feast, blending the evocative tones of the “rabeca”, the rhythmic heartbeat of the zabumba, the soulful melodies of the accordion, and more, all interwoven with mesmerising vocals. From original compositions to beloved forró classics, Maria and The Band’s repertoire is a celebration of Brazil’s musical heritage.
With their eagerly awaited album, “9 Rosas,” set for release in September 2024, Maria ventures into new sonic territory. Produced by Jerusa Leão and Rodrigo Samico, a distinguished Brazilian producer hailing from Pernambuco with a rich portfolio including collaborations with esteemed artists like Alessandra Leão, Maciel Salú, and Martins, this album is a testament to cross-cultural exchange. Featuring the talents of French-Canadian musician Kelly Lefaive, who is an integral part of Maria’s ensemble, “9 Rosas” promises to be a harmonious fusion of Canadian and Brazilian influences, bridging continents and cultures through the universal language of music.
