Silhouetted figures of a family playing along the shoreline at sunset in Costa del Sol, El Salvador.

Description

Some lived experiences feel as though they transcend time.

Throughout the last decade I have found myself building a photographic archive of memories that have left an impression on me. In Costa del Sol, El Salvador, my family plays by the shoreline as the sun sets.

About the photographer

Joel Rodriguez is a documentary photographer and visual artist whose work often focuses on the tangibility of memory. In recent years, he has begun incorporating textile processes into his practice. “Thread and fabric have become a way to recontextualize and rework my photographic archive, offering a tactile approach to revisiting images. Textile functions almost like a healing tissue allowing me to repair, intervene in, and breathe new life into photographs that hold personal histories.” His most recent solo show, Delicate is Difficult, looks back at nearly a decade of image-making by re-interpreting the act of remembering using photography as both a foundation and medium for intervention.
